Common plastering questions

What is skimming?

Skimming is a thin final coat of plaster applied over plasterboard or existing walls and ceilings to create a smooth, flat surface ready for painting. It is the most common plastering finish on modern homes and refurbishments.

What is the difference between plastering and skimming?

Plastering covers the whole trade — including float & set onto brickwork and boarding — while skimming specifically means the thin smooth finishing coat. Most re-skim jobs are skimming; new walls may need floating first.

How long does plaster take to dry?

Fresh plaster typically takes a few days to a couple of weeks to fully dry, depending on thickness, ventilation and the weather. It usually changes from dark to an even light shade when it is ready for decoration.

Can you plaster over Artex?

In most cases yes — a textured Artex ceiling can be skimmed over for a flat, modern finish, or removed where preferred. We will advise the best option on a site visit.

How much does plastering cost?
